Neon online bank account: my 2025 review

Article published on 24 May 2025

🏦 Why I chose the Neon online bank account

In 2021, I discovered there were solid digital alternatives to traditional banks in Switzerland. After some research, I opened a Neon online bank account, which I’ve used as my main account ever since — for receiving my salary, paying bills, and managing everyday expenses.

I also use Revolut for euro transfers and a few credit cards to take advantage of cashback offers and insurance benefits. But for my day-to-day banking in Switzerland, Neon remains my go-to.

💡 What is the Neon online bank account?

Neon is a 100% digital bank account with no physical branches. Customer funds are held with Hypothekarbank Lenzburg, a regulated Swiss bank that protects deposits up to CHF 100,000 under Swiss law.

Neon offers four types of accounts, including a completely free option. For someone like me who rarely needs to deposit or withdraw cash, it's more than enough.

📘 Easy and fast registration

Opening the account was very simple: just an ID (Swiss or not) and a short video identification process via the app. The official Neon website has a clear FAQ that explains every step.

📲 Why I use the Neon bank app daily

I receive my salary on my Neon IBAN every 25th of the month, right on time. I connected my eBill account to automate recurring bills, and I scan or upload QR code invoices directly through the app.

🔄 A very useful feature: Neon allows you to upload a QR code image. If I get an invoice by email or WhatsApp, I can upload it and Neon fills in all the payment details. No other Swiss banking app I’ve used does this.

💳 Physical card and extra features

For a one-time fee of CHF 20, you get a physical Mastercard debit card. I don’t use it much — I prefer cards with cashback or insurance. Neon also supports Twint, although I haven’t activated it yet.

📈 Investing with Neon

Since 2024, Neon has introduced Neon Invest, which allows users to buy stocks and ETFs directly from the app. You can make individual purchases or set up a monthly investment plan.

💰 For example, I invest CHF 100 on the 28th of each month into 3 ETFs I’ve selected. The money is automatically deducted and invested.

✅ Pros of Neon Invest

  • Low fees
  • Fully app-based management
  • Great for beginners and passive investing

⚠️ Cons of Neon Invest

  • Limited ETF and stock options
  • No personal advice or planning tools
  • Maximum 3 ETFs in the plan
  • Interface is not very flexible
  • Fixed fees impact small investments more

✅ Benefits of the Neon account

  • Free account with no monthly fees
  • Swiss personal IBAN
  • Clean, user-friendly app
  • Fast setup and transparent use
  • Upload QR codes directly for invoices

⚠️ Downsides of the Neon account

  • No physical branches or dedicated ATMs
  • No real credit card option
  • Support is only via chat or email

📏 Conclusion: why I recommend Neon

After more than three years, I still consider the Neon online bank account the most convenient and modern banking solution I’ve used in Switzerland.

The addition of Neon Invest makes it even more valuable, especially for those looking to invest small amounts regularly. If you're looking for a reliable digital bank in Switzerland, Neon is worth a try.
